Make sure the affected area has lots of ventilation.  Any sitting water damage can turn into black mold or fungus and those are harmful to your health.  Even though the surface area of something they feel dry, it may still be wet or damp.  Better to be safe than sorry and keep the fan running.

If the flooding is severe, you may end up having to completely replace parts of the carpet including the padding and possibly even deal with drywall issues.

If the water damage is significant, you may need to resort to finding a water damage restoration service.  These companies specialize in coming out and taking care of flood situations or heavy water damage on your own.  It is especially important to consider a water damage company if there is any kind of risk from sanitation.  These companies are trained in handling biohazard materials and if you are dealing with plumbing leaks, it may be a poor attempt to contact one of these companies.

Get in touch with your own insurance company.  If you have a water damage insurance rider, you may be able to file a claim to cover the cost of the damage.

Final notes on water damage cleanup.  Any damaged installation may need to be replaced.  If you are not sure of the extent of the water damage, make sure you contact a water damage professional.  Clean up what you can, but be safe and let a professional take care and prevent potential health issues.

Finally, before you do any water damage clean up if you think the water is in any way contaminated do not as any ventilation and call on water damage restoration company right away.  You do not want to circulate any possible toxic vapors in the air.

We deal a lot with water damage and we are able to save the pad in a clean water loss, unfortunately in most cases now insurance companies want the pad removed regardles of the category of water loss.

I would shut down all the electrical power and water supply to your house first for safety sake, before doing anything else.
